Tencent Holdings (腾讯控股) is China's largest internet and gaming conglomerate, headquartered in Shenzhen, and a major investor and developer in artificial intelligence. Founded in 1998 by Pony Ma and Zhang Zhidong, Tencent operates WeChat (微信, 1.3 billion monthly active users), QQ, and the world's largest gaming business. Tencent's AI division has developed the Hunyuan (混元) family of large language models, which power AI features across Tencent's massive ecosystem including WeChat, Tencent Cloud, QQ, and gaming. Hunyuan is a multimodal foundation model series supporting text, image, video, and 3D generation, with the Hunyuan-Pro model achieving top-tier performance on Chinese-language benchmarks. Key AI products include Hunyuan Chat (混元助手), a conversational assistant integrated into WeChat; Hunyuan video generation models that compete with Kling and Jimeng; and the Tencent Cloud TI Platform for enterprise MLOps. Tencent is also one of the most active AI investors globally, having backed over 100 AI startups including Baichuan AI, Zhipu AI, and Moonshot AI. As a publicly traded company (HKEx, market cap ~$500 billion), Tencent's AI research is funded through its core Internet and gaming revenue.
