SenseTime Group (商汤集团) is a Chinese artificial intelligence company founded in 2014 by Professor Tang Xiao'ou (汤晓鸥), a world-renowned computer vision scientist from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, along with Xu Li and Xu Bing. Headquartered in Shanghai and Hong Kong, SenseTime was once the world's most valuable AI startup, reaching a $7.5 billion valuation before its IPO in 2021. SenseTime built its reputation as a leader in computer vision and deep learning research, developing advanced facial recognition, object detection, and autonomous driving systems deployed across smart cities, financial services, and mobile internet sectors. The company has since expanded into foundation models with its SenseNova (日日新) platform, which provides a comprehensive suite of generative AI capabilities spanning text, image, video, 3D content, and decision intelligence. Key products include SenseChat (商量), a conversational LLM; SenseMirage, a text-to-image generation platform; and SenseAuto, its autonomous driving division. SenseTime is one of the most prolific AI patent holders globally and operates SenseTime Research, a world-class lab that has published hundreds of top-tier AI research papers at CVPR, ICCV, and NeurIPS. The company went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in December 2021 (stock code: 0020.HK), raising $740 million in its IPO, the largest AI IPO in Asia. Despite facing US sanctions and a challenging macro environment, SenseTime continues to invest heavily in generative AI as a publicly traded company with a market capitalization of approximately $5 billion.
