Moonshot AI (月之暗面) is a Chinese artificial intelligence company founded in March 2023 by Yang Zhilin (杨植麟), a prominent AI researcher formerly associated with Tsinghua University and Carnegie Mellon University who previously co-founded the RecurrentLM architecture. Headquartered in Beijing, Moonshot AI rose to prominence with the launch of Kimi (Kimi智能助手), a conversational AI assistant distinguished by its extraordinarily long context window. Kimi v3 introduced an industry-leading 2-million-token context window — capable of ingesting entire multi-volume book series, complete codebases, or thousands of pages of legal and financial documents in a single conversation. Kimi has become one of China's most popular standalone AI chatbot applications, building a loyal user base through its exceptional document analysis and long-form content synthesis capabilities. The company's foundation models, the Moonshot series, power Kimi and are also available via developer APIs. In February 2024, Moonshot AI raised over $1 billion in a Series B funding round led by Alibaba, with participation from Ant Group and existing investors, valuing the company at approximately $3 billion. Moonshot AI represents the new wave of Chinese AI startups focused on product excellence and consumer adoption, competing directly with Baidu, Alibaba, and ByteDance in the consumer AI assistant space.
